Cooking For The Perpetual Bachelor
by Michael Patronas
http://www.yahoo.com
Every modern single guy needs to know the basics of cooking
in order to survive. Eating out on a nightly basis isn~t
possible; it~s too expensive, or more often than not, too
unhealthy. If only in an effort to keep your body and your
wallet healthy, it~s necessary to have some basic skills in
the kitchen. Some people think of it as a basic Boy Scout
skill, kind of like knowing how to start a fire by rubbing
two sticks together or having the ability to pitch a pup
tent.
There is no shortage of easy-to-make recipes that can be
thrown together quickly by a well equipped bachelor. After
all, there are lots of places to get cooking ideas --
cookbooks, Internet recipe sites, and sometimes mom may be
able to come up with a few good suggestions. No single man
has to go hungry.
Just like the motto of the Boy Scouts, the most essential
component of cooking is to BE PREPARED; otherwise your
culinary efforts are likely to go down in flames. It~s just
as necessary to be prepared in the kitchen as it is to be
prepared in the wild. Even the modest cook wouldn~t be
caught without the basic essentials: Pots (at least two,
one small saucepan and one large pot for cooking stews,
soups, pasta and other large volume dishes), frying pans
(at least two, one large, one small, for cooking up all
sorts of fried items, after all, no Monday Night Football
game would be complete without fried food), cooking spoons
(both slotted and nonslotted), spatulas (metal and
plastic), and of course, plastic containers (for storing
leftovers.
Owning these simple tools is sure to inspire confidence and
visions of Julia Child cooking up a storm. Don~t try to
cook her dishes, at least in the beginning. Go for
something smaller and very simple. Maybe hamburgers or
chili would be in order. You could even get really creative
and make chili burgers.
With a little time invested (and maybe a burnt hand or
two), any guy can be a whiz in the kitchen and not only
impress the ladies, but feed himself in the process.
Always remember to follow the recipe at first (there
will be plenty of time to come up with some ~off the
cuff~ concoctions when you buy your first Hibachi, in
the meantime, remember to go easy on the jalape~o
powder and have some fun in the kitchen!
