Picking the Perfect Fitness Club For You

If you've decided that it's time to get in shape, one of
your best tools can be a membership in a fitness club.
Today's health and fitness clubs offer exercise equipment,
weight training equipment, tracks, pools, saunas, treadmills
and just about anything else that will help you get fit and
stay fit. Depending on the club, they may also offer
personal trainers, juice bars, masseurs, spa treatments and
other luxury perks that will make you feel like a pampered
queen.
Attractive prices and promotions can be a tempting draw when
you're looking for a club to help you get fit and stay fit.
Price is only one factor in your choice, and it should be a
minor one. To help you decide which fitness club is the
right one for you, consider the following points.
Can you get there easily? Where the club is located can be a
major factor in whether you use your membership often. Look
beyond location for other conveniences, though. Is there
enough parking nearby? Are the hours of operation
convenient? If there are special activities that you enjoy,
are they scheduled at times that make sense for you?
Is the club clean? Once you've narrowed your choices to a
few, make some visits. Don't feel like you're 'wasting their
time' -membership in a fitness club can cost hundreds of
dollars. You have every right to make sure that your money
is being invested well. Cleanliness is important, especially
in common areas like showers and changing rooms. Equipment
should be wiped down regularly with a good antibacterial to
prevent the spread of any germs.
Is the atmosphere congenial? This can have as much to do
with the gym's clientele as it does with the staff. Ask for
a couple of guest passes and visit to make sure that you'll
feel comfortable there. If you feel out of place, chances
are you'll avoid showing up to exercise.
If you're looking for a family membership, does the fitness
club offer something for your entire family? The health club
that was perfect for your single buddy may be all wrong for
your family. Make sure that the club has trainers
experienced with children, as well as activities and
equipment that is age-appropriate for them.
Are extra amenities convenient for you? A fitness club that
offers child care may seem like a busy mother's dream - drop
the kids in the gym and go work out. It doesn't mean
anything if it's not available when you need it, though.
Make sure that amenities and programs that interest you are
scheduled for times that are convenient.
Do they have the equipment and activities you want? If
you've got your heart set on a fitness club where you can
work out your kinks with a sparring partner, you'll be
disappointed with one that has no boxing area. Make sure
that the club can provide the activities that you need and
want before signing a contract. If not, shop around till you
find one that does.
Will you be able to use the things you want? Don't make a
choice based on one visit during your lunch hour if the only
time you'll be able to work out is after work. Stop in
during the hours that you'll usually use the equipment to
make sure that you'll be able to. If you have to wait an
hour to get on the treadmill, you may prefer a less crowded
club.
Finally, can you afford it? Don't just rule out the perfect
club because the membership fee seems out of reach. There
are often options to help you pay for membership in a
fitness club. Ask staff at the club about budget plans, and
check with your health insurance and your employer. Many of
them cover at least part of the fees for health and fitness
club. After all, a healthy employee is in your company's
best interest, too.
