The Proper Way to Diet

There are a million things we do because we fear death and
yet we neglect our diet. An unbalanced diet is one of the
most dangerous things to the human body. For a long
healthy life one must eat a well balanced diet, but what is
a well balanced diet?

A balanced diet is a diet that has all the nutrients
available in it in appropriate amount. It must contain
carbohydrates, protein, fat, vitamin, mineral salts and
fibers. It is also necessary that these nutrients are
present in proper proportions. Taking of water should also
not be forgotten.

The carbohydrate provides most of our energy. A
carbohydrate is made of carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen.
Carbohydrates normally come as starches. These are
converted to glucose which the body burns as fuel. Good
sources of carbohydrates include potatoes, rice, and bread.
While recent diets suggest completely cutting carbohydrates
this is not wise. The body needs carbohydrates to have
adequate energy. While cutting carbs may cause weight loss
it is very unhealthy. The body is burning its own muscle
rather than the glucose that is supposed to be used for
energy.

Proteins can be found in meat, beans, and nuts and are made
of carbon, hydrogen, nitrogen, oxygen, and sometimes
sulfur. The body converts proteins into amino acids of
which there are 20 types. The amino acids are then used
for growth and repair in the body.

Our body can also use proteins as a source of energy. When
excess amino acids are removed from the body, the Nitrogen
gets excreted in the form of urea. It is the liver that
makes the urea which is then put into our urine by the
kidney. Lean meat, eggs, fish, beans are a few rich
sources of proteins.

Vitamins are required by the body but the body does not
produce its own vitamins. Therefore we must obtain
vitamins through outside sources such as food and
supplements. Although the body can survive for a certain
amount o time without vitamins certain diseases and even
death can result from a pro longed vitamin deficiency. The
body requires small amounts of vitamin A, B, C, D, and E.

Although mineral salts are more abundant in our body than
vitamins our body must still acquire some mineral salts
through food and outside sources. Examples of mineral
salts are iron, calcium, sodium, and iodine. These
minerals are very important to the body. Iron is required
to create hemoglobin. Calcium is used to keep teeth and
bones healthy. Sodium is required by every cell in the
body, especially nerve cells. Finally iodine is needed to
produce thyroxin.

Fiber also required by the body, is sometimes called
roughage. Fiber can not be digested and therefore passes
straight through the bowel taking other foods along with
it. For this reason Fiber is helpful to those who suffer
constipation. Fiber is found in whole grains and certain
fruits.

Water is maybe the most important part of a balanced diet
even though it has no nutrimental value. The number one
cause of hospitalization every year is dehydration. This
is because every function performed by the body requires
water. The normal adult should consume at least eight
glasses of water every day. This will ensure proper
hydration unless the person is overly active or exposed to
extreme temperatures.

To summarize, we can say that our body needs all the
nutrients in proper proportion. If your body lacks
protein, you won't grow properly and your body cells won't
be able to repair damaged cells or wounds. If you don't
get enough energy containing food, you would feel tired and
if you take too much fats and carbohydrates, you would turn
overweight.
