PICKING VITAMINS
by Jeanette Waterman

We have all heard for years that vitamins are essential to
life. We know that some vitamins come from the foods we
eat but often, supplements are needed to ensure we get the
appropriate level of vitamins needed. The nutrients
derived from vitamins are what make a person feel healthy
and energetic. In fact, vitamins help the body function
normally and are crucial to vitality, growth, and overall
health.
It is important to understand that you can get many
benefits from taking vitamins and supplements but these do
not replace those consumed from food. Since vitamins have
no energy or caloric value on their own, they should be
taken as supplements to a good diet to boost the body~s
levels. Although everyone can benefit from taking
vitamins, people with poor eating habits, people with
health problems, or individuals constantly on the go,
probably benefit most.
Mineral intake is just as important as vitamins,
especially when you consider that our whole structure
(including bones, cartilage, toe nails and fingernails)
are made up of minerals. There are so many chemical
reactions happening inside us that need minerals to help
speed things along. They can also aid the effectiveness of
proteins, carbohydrates and fats. Not only that but they
help to ensure that the way or body utilizes some vitamins
is synchronized and minerals help the body to absorb
vitamins, too.
There are hundreds of different minerals brands and types
crowding the shelves but you need to make wise decisions
and choose high quality vitamins as they can be absorbed
by the body far more effectively. No matter how well you
eat today, have no doubt that what you eat lacks some of
the essential vitamins and minerals you need. We probably
have modern farming methods to thank for that. It used to
be that vitamins and minerals were naturally replaced in
the earth, plants would take these in and we would eat
them. The levels of vitamins and minerals in today~s food
are nowhere near where they should be.
Just a few examples of how vitamins benefit the body,
consider beta-carotene. This particular vitamin has been
shown to protect the body from cancer as well as heart
disease. Biotin is important for energy production among
other things and vitamin A is an effective antioxidant.
Whether eating healthy or not, chances are you still need
to add vitamin supplements to your daily intake. Check
with your local health food store or you can order quality
vitamins from many online resources.
